Description: Covenant House New Orleans was founded on the edge of the French Quarter 30 years ago to provide a safe haven for homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth (ages 22 and under). We have provided over 20,000 kids with food, shelter, clothing, medical care, educational and vocational support, individual and family counseling, job readiness and placement, short & long-term housing, life skills, and more.

Our youth are among the most damaged in our community; the vast majority are victims of physical and/or sexual abuse, domestic and/or street violence, and the resulting trauma that often leads to substance abuse, mental health issues, and more. Tulane Medical School estimates over 85% suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or some form of profound trauma. As always, we’re committed to an “open intake” policy of never turning away a youth in need. There’s always room for one more.

We provided food, clothing, shelter, and comprehensive services to 719 youth last year, most of whom were served in our emergency Crisis Center. We increased capacity and services in our Rights of Passage (ROP) transitional living program, our “University for Street Kids.” We further expanded the number of off-site independent apartments available for individuals & families and supportive housing for chronically mentally ill youth. Our newest offsite apartments offer graduating youth “tapered” counseling and support until they are fully independent. 60% of our youth come to us from New Orleans, 20% from around Louisiana, and 20% from across the country.
