Family Gateway Inc. - Dallas, TX
Transitional housing for homeless families.
Among the services we offer are short-term supportive housing, transitional housing, permanent (long-term) supportive housing, comprehensive case management, community transition services, job training, life skills training, and after school and summer programs for children.
Family Gateway is now the largest provider of case management and housing to homeless families in Dallas County.
Family Gateway provides supportive housing programs designed to address the varied needs of our clients. These programs fall into two broad U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-defined categories: transitional housing and permanent supportive housing.
Each family goes through an intake process where they are matched to the housing and services program that best fits their needs. Every family receives a case manager who works with them to create a well-rounded Family Case Plan.
The Transitional Housing Program serves 34% of our clients. Phase I of the program is housing at the Annette G. Strauss Center, where families reside for an average of 4 to 6 months. Phase II is housing at a local apartment complex with a Family Gateway case manager on site. Families in the transitional housing program can remain in Phase II for up to one year.
The Permanent Supportive Housing Program serves 66% of our clients. Permanent supportive housing is designed for families that are homeless due to multiple profound barriers to success, such as a physical, cognitive, or behavioral disability, and qualify for continued financial support from the federal government. Families generally participate in this program for five or more years. Family Gateway partners with six Dallas-area apartment complexes to house over 250 families in permanent supportive housing.
We offer an array of life-changing services delivered directly by Family Gateway and through our Community Partners.
Our Adult Services include work readiness (assistance with resumes, interviews, customer service, wardrobe, and job search), life skills (planning and time management), financial literacy (managing money and use of credit), parenting education (child development, appropriate methods of discipline and interaction), and self-care (empowerment workshops, healthy relationships classes, domestic violence classes, and referrals for mental health support).
Our Children’s Services include after-school and summer programming consisting of tutoring, mentoring, homework assistance, and recreational and enrichment activities. Emotional and mental health support is also offered through our community partners.
These services are designed to provide broadening experiences and to help children excel in school and in their relationships.
Our Early Childhood Education Program ensures that all preschool-aged children in our care have the opportunity to receive quality, educationally-driven preschool care from a number of partner providers. Our partners include Vogel Alcove, Educational First Steps, and Head Start.
