Description: Family and victims of domestic violence shelter. Also single men and women's shelter.

The Homeless Shelter offers a warm, welcoming, and safe facility to those needing shelter. The shelter is located on Hospital Street across from Riverview Psychiatric Center, a little over a mile from the Soup Kitchen. Originally having only 10 beds, the shelter now offers 20 beds, and 10 overflow beds each night to help those who are homeless.

The shelter is full virtually each night, and turns away 40-85 individuals and families each month. In 2000, we saw a growing number of families and children needing safety and warmth in our shelter. We have seen as many as 8,500 bed-nights in a year (one person/bed/night), up from 1,800 in 2000. Currently we see a mix of families, couples, single parents with children, and singles.

Over 60% of our guests are families, with 1 of every 3 being a child. The average stay is 30 days. Our goal is to get them settled in transitional or permanent housing such that they can receive the care they need to become self-sufficient, working toward employment and education whenever possible.

Bread of Life Ministries has two shelters serving the Capital region. Our family and individual shelter is a  26 bed facility, while our Veterans Shelter has bed space for 12 men. Both of the shelters are staffed at all hours, providing a safe and structured environment for the residents.

At Bread of Life we are not just a shelter from the elements, but a home where people feel safe and welcomed upon arrival. They receive a brand new bed-in-a-bag and a new pillow that they will take with them when they leave. Bread of Life Ministries Shelter provides a structured program where people work with an onsite case manager throughout the week toward goals such as permanent housing, education and employment, all while addressing the underlying reasons for their homelessness. Case Managers work with people to become self-sufficient by connecting them with resources and support networks that provide new opportunities for success.

Volunteers Requests by Bread Life Ministries Shelter: Bread of Life depends heavily upon our community volunteers to accomplish our mission to help those in need. The Soup Kitchen alone needs over 8,000 hours per year of volunteer service. Whether you are looking for a one hour, one weekend, one week, or an ongoing opportunity to volunteer, we can provide it for you! Between our Soup Kitchen, Homeless Shelters, housing units and the Center for Life Skills, we can usually offer a variety of volunteer times and options suited to your needs, availability and skills. Individuals, small groups, business staffs, families, youth groups and churches can offer services to help the homeless and hungry. To volunteer or for more information, please contact our offices at (207) 626-3434 or email us at breadoflife@mainebreadoflife.org.
