Description: Emergency Shelter for homeless and financial assistance

The new temporary shelter, which has been inspected by various Daytona government employees for city codes and things such as smoke detectors, will be available only to those who Salvation Army case workers determine to be in most dire need of coming off the streets. Homeless people will not be able to just show up and ask for one of the 46 new beds, but they could inquire about the 18 permanent emergency shelter beds at the Ballough Road location that are available for $10 per night.
The beds in the gym will be offered free of charge, and those who stay there will be able to come inside every day at 5 p.m., get a free dinner, shower, secure storage containers for their belongings, a place to watch television and eat breakfast the next morning. They'll be asked to leave the gym after breakfast, but if they have nowhere else to go the Salvation Army will allow them to remain on the property in a courtyard area with portable toilets until the gym reopens at 5 p.m.
Case workers will help those who stay at the shelter figure out where they can remain on a more permanent basis and connect them with programs that will help them secure benefits they may be due, get drug or alcohol addiction treatment, find mental health help and look for jobs.
