Stepping Stones Shelter

Emergency housing: up to 30 days. Meals, Counseling. Case management

The Emergency/Assessment Shelter, the most well-known Stepping Stones program, provides shelter and services for up to 6 families at any one time, generally housing around 30 families each year, including more than 100 individuals. These families represented two-parent families, single moms, single dads, and multi generational households both those headed by and those including retired grandparents. Families included family members with disabilities, who needed additional resource support. Many of our single parents (nearly half of all our families) were young mothers, between the ages of 18-25, a group whose needs are very unique, as their own needs compete with those of their children.

Permanent Supportive Housing

Hope Housing
Stepping Stones Hope Housing program provides permanent housing and on-going support services for 2 families, each with a disabled head of household. This 10-year partnership with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless has been a lifeline for these families. Through the extraordinary efforts of program coordinator, Jill Hurd, and the support of the community, including the staff at their neighborhood schools, the Hope Housing program has helped these families remain together and stably housed.

Housing Initiative Program (HIP)
Stepping Stones Shelter provides service coordination for six formerly homeless families placed into permanent housing under Montgomery Countys Housing Initiative Program (HIP). Stepping Stones service coordinators provide referrals to needed services in the community and make sure the families pay their rent and utilities on time to ensure that they remain housed.
